QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

To ensure an effective molecular weld, only apply the underwater epoxy, Belzona 1212 to firm and well-roughened surfaces. Belzona 1212 is surface tolerant and can be applied on wet and oily surfaces; however, it is recommended that the best possible surface preparation is administered. To achieve this, roughen the surface by blast cleaning, deeply scoring, or grinding. Then, clear away any loose contamination before combining the reactive components. To do this, transfer the required amount of Base and Solidifier components onto the Belzona Working Surface, ensuring the correct mixing ratio is followed. Mix thoroughly to achieve a uniform material free of any streakiness.
The cure time for paste-grade epoxy repair composite, Belzona 1212 varies depending on the ambient conditions and will be reduced for thicker sections and extended for thinner sections. The cure time is as follows:
Temperature Machinable Light loading Full loading
41°F/ 5°C 2 ½ hours 5 hours 16 hours
50°F/ 10°C 2 hours 4 hours 12 hours
68°F/ 20°C 40 minutes 90 minutes 8 hours
86°F/ 30°C 30 minutes 60 minutes 5 hours
104°F/ 40°C 20 minutes 30 minutes 2 ½ hours
These times are for a thickness of approximately 0.25 in/ 6mm. Overcoating is possible with suitable Belzona products, the maximum overcoat time is 8 hours. Post-cure is possible if desired. Once Belzona 1212 has reached the ‘machinable’ level, it can be post-cured at a temperature between 122°F/ 50°C and 212°F/ 100°C for 1-2 hours.
